What is Nanotechnology? | Definition, Applications

In the world of technology advancements, we all innovations and captured the imagination quite like nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is a cutting-edge technology which deals with the manipulation and control of matter at nanoscale.

The term “nanotechnology” occurs from a Greek work “nano” means “dwarf”. The term is used to scale of objects being measured in nanometers which is about one billionth of a meter in size.

What is Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is the use of matter on atomic, molecular and super molecular scales for industrial applications. Nanotechnology is a manipulation of matter on an atomic scale to produce new structures, materials and devices. The nanotechnology is the scientific advancement in many sectors such as consumer products, energy, production, medicine, materials, research and manufacturing.

Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers (nm). Nanotechnology is defined by size is used in various fields of science such as molecular biology, organic chemistry, engineering, energy storage, etc. Nanotechnology refers to engineered structures, devices and systems.

The concept of Nanotechnology was first discovered by renowned physicist Richard Feynman in the year 1959 in his lecture, “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom” in which he described the possibilities of manipulation of atoms to create new materials and devices.

The emergence of nanotechnology as a field started in the 1980s in which the development and popularized the conceptual framework for nanotechnology.

Applications of Nanotechnology:

Here are some of the various applications of Nanotechnology are as follows,

Medicine: Nanotechnology is a revolution in a medical industry. It is used for targeted therapies with nanoparticles carrying medications directly to the tissues of cells and used to revolutionized drugs delivery.

Science and Materials: Nanotechnology is used to make an advancement in materials with remarkable properties and used to make lightweights and stronger composites materials for various applications such as automobile, aerospace and production.

Clothing: Nanotechnology used in textile industries such as development of fabrics that offers unique properties such as water resistance, stain resistance and anti-microbial properties.

Energy: Nanotechnology plays an important role in enhancing energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. It is used to improve the performance of solar cells that used to store the energy.

Electronics: The components used in nanotechnology are faster and more efficient to use in electronic devices. Nanomaterials are used in electronic components to improve its performance more.

Nanotechnology may be able to create many new materials and devices with wide range of applications.
