The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public technical universities across the India. IITs are governed by the Institutes of technology, Act 1961, officially declared as the “Institutes of National Importance” since 1961. The Minister of Education is the ex officio Chairperson of the IIT Council. Aspirants need to pass the JEE Advanced and GATE respectively to get admission into these institutions at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

There are a total number of 23 IITs across the country and provides nearly 16 thousand seats to the engineering aspirants. Here is a list of the best Indian Institute of Technology is as follows:

Indian Institute of Technology – Madras:

IIT Madras is located in Chennai. The institute was founded in 1959 by the Government of India with assistance from the Government of West Germany. IIT Madras is ranked the top engineering institute in India by the Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework since its inception in 2016.

Indian Institute of Technology – Delhi:

IIT Delhi was established in the year 1961 at Hauz Khas, Delhi. It is one of the oldest Indian Institutes of Technology in India. The institute was named as the College of Engineering and Technology but later in the year 1963, the institute was given the name IIT. In 2018 IIT Delhi was also given the status of Institution of Eminence (IoE) by Government of India which granted almost-full autonomy.

Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay:

IIT Bombay was established in the year 1958 and located at Powai, Mumbai. It is the second oldest IIT of India. This is one of the oldest engineering institutes in India. The institute provides graduate and post graduates programmes presenting doctoral degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. From the last five years, 75 percent of the top 100 rank holders of JEE prefer IIT Bombay for admission. 

Indian Institute of Technology – Kharagpur:

IIT Kharagpur is the oldest Indian Institute of Technology which was established in the year 1951 at Kharagpur, West Bengal. The institute is the first of the IITs to be established and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance. The institute organizes Spring fest and Kshitij fest. IIT Kharagpur shown great performance for NIRF rankings over the years.

Indian Institute of Technology – Kanpur:

IIT Kanpur is a public technical and research university was established in the year 1959 located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. It was declared to be an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the Institutes of Technology Act. As a part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme which included the assistance of a consortium of nine US Research Universities.

Indian Institute of Technology – Roorkee:

IIT Roorkee is a public technical and research university located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. IIT Roorkee previously known as the University of Roorkee and Thomason College of Civil Engineering was established in the year 1847. The institute has 21 academic departments for undergraduate, postgraduate, dual degree, and doctorate programs. The institute has shown outstanding performance in national and international rankings. 

Indian Institute of Technology – Guwahati:

IIT Guwahati is a public technical and research university located in Guwahati, Assam was established by the Government of India in the year 1994. It is the sixth IIT established in India. The institute helps students to focus on research and entrepreneurship.

Indian Institute of Technology – Hyderabad:

IIT Hyderabad was established in 2008 at Sargareddy, Telangana. It has 1,155 Undergraduate, 635 Masters and 893 PhD students with 222 full-time faculties. IIT Hyderabad holds an excellent placement record. The institute conducts fest Elan & Vision which is a techno-culture fest.

Indian Institute of Technology – Varanasi:

IIT Varanasi was established in 1919 as Banaras Engineering College at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It became the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University in 1968. The institute has 14 academic departments for various courses. IIT Varanasi consistently ranked among the top 10 Engineering colleges in the country. The institute organizes fests as Spardha, Technex.

Indian Institute of Technology – Indore:

IIT Indore is an autonomous public technical and research institute located in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. IIT Indore was founded in 2009. IIT Indore is officially recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The institute is one of the eight new IITs established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
